A workplace ready for 2012 and beyond
May 30, 2007
Newham has launched Workplace, a free customised recruitment and training service to help job seekers and businesses benefit from the growing opportunities in the borough, including the 2012 Games.
Workplace is driven by employers' needs and will meet the increased demand for trained staff in the run up to 2012 and beyond. The scheme, which also supports businesses to maximise prospects in Newham, was opened by Mayor Sir Robin Wales.
Sir Robin said: "With exciting developments such as the Olympics, Stratford City, Silvertown Quays and Canning Town, Newham is really changing. Major employers are coming into the borough and I want local people to benefit from these opportunities over the coming years."
Adding: "We have spoken to employers to determine their requirements and now we're offering residents the chance to gain the skills and confidence to secure employment and play their part in the legacy of Newham."
Workplace provides a tailored service to people who wish to find out more about employment and training options in their area. The scheme tackles the barriers that people may face when seeking employment such as childcare, education or experience. A variety of free courses are on offer covering fields including hospitality, retail and construction.
Sir Robin added: "Getting people into work is one of the council's key priorities and one which I am extremely passionate about."
Workplace offers large and small businesses skilled employees without charging recruitment costs. For businesses starting out in Newham, large scale job brokerage, training schemes and expert advice is also provided free of charge.
Companies already backing the scheme include the developers for Stratford City and Silvertown Quays, John Lewis, London City Airport and Bovis Lend Lease.
Geoff Willetts, Chief Executive of Murphy who are currently working on the Olympic Park site, said: "Workplace sets up on site job brokerage to enable local people to get jobs on the Olympic Park site. One hundred and nine people have already started working with us and we look forward to employing even more from Workplace."
The Stratford Workplace is based at Boardman House, in Broadway. A second Workplace is due to open in Canning Town later this year.
