Newham prepares to welcome the world with Workplace
November 06, 2008
Fourteen Workplace candidates have completed a course about becoming a Visit Newham Ambassador. Workplace is a flagship Newham Council project which offers free customised recruitment and training services to help job seekers and businesses benefit from growing opportunities in the borough, including the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The course at The Hub in Canning Town involved learning about what Newham has to offer tourists during the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
Participants developed their presentation skills with the help of officers from the Theatre Royal Stratford East, participated in walks led by local experienced tour guides, learnt about the history and regeneration plans for the borough and gained an overview of how to improve their employment opportunities in tourism, hospitality and visitor information sectors.
The course culminated in participants creating their own visitor information lectures.
Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, said: "Opportunities such as this course are a direct benefit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"Driving up employability is one of my key priorities. I congratulate those who completed the course and wish them all the best in their future careers."
