Better odds in the job market
December 16, 2011
Aspers expects to create 440 jobs, with 70 per cent going to Newham residents. The day before the casino opened its doors, we spoke to three of those already in post.
The cloakroom assistant - Kathleen McCarthy
“I am a single parent with two kids and I’ve suffered from ill health. I’d been unemployed for 11 years – it was mentally draining. But Workplace helped me build my self-confidence. And from my first visit to starting the job, it’s only been a couple of months.
“My Workplace adviser’s brilliant; she still rings me to see how I’m doing. I’m so grateful to her. Things are going to be different for me and my kids now. I’m really happy.”
The electronic gaming host – Tanya Sangari
“I’d given up applying for jobs when my friend told me about Workplace. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have even known that Aspers was recruiting.
“To do this job you just need good customer service skills, which I have from working in retail. But working here fits in well with my studies, where retail jobs didn’t.”
The croupier – Waseem Perveiz
“I’d been unemployed for seven months before this. I’d applied for loads of jobs but got nowhere. I thank my lucky stars that I went to Workplace.
“I’ve done customer services training and a Croupier NVQ level 2 at the Gaming College, provided by Workplace. It was hard but it’s paid off. This job’s exciting and different. I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me.”
